SEMO Division News

It seems our President is currently having technical difficulties - his computer is down. So I will attempt to bring everyone up to date on our latest endeavors.

Our Pen Sale/Goat Fair was a success, in a manner of speaking. The weather cooperated, the goats cooperated, the consigners cooperated, and the goat brats and burgers were delicious, however, the buyers did not show. (see photos) We sold only 5 lots. There is ongoing discussion as to how to improve for next year's sale.

Our last meeting was held at the home of Kim and Kelly Kranawetter (who did such a wonderful job on the concessions at the Pen Sale). At that meeting,Peck West was presented with a plaque honoring him and showing our appreciation for all he has done for our Division over the years.Without Peck and his sidekick, Dee,our organization would not be the same.

We have also decided to have a Production Sale on September 27, 2008 at the Bank of America Pavilion (the show barn) at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. The final details are being worked out and all members will be getting all the information as soon as the committee can get it together. The committee consists of Charlie & Eva Rainwater, Susan & Alvie Richmond, Joey & Jane Haines, Kim & Kelly Kranawetter, the Brown Family (Brookside Boers) and the Jon Cowley family. It will be chaired by Lindell Barks.  This is a members-only production sale.

We have also decided to set up an informational booth outside the show pavilion area during the week of the SEMO District Fair. Dennis has suggested that we give out samples of goat summer sausage or a comparable product, but since we will be outside the concession area, we don't know yet if this will be feasible. Eva will check on this. There was also some discussion about setting up informational booths at the various local Ag Expos. More will follow on that.

Dennis has suggested that we put in extra premium money at local wether shows. Three were selected to start out this year; they are: Butler County Fair, East Perry County Fair and the Ripley County Fair. Dennis will contact all the fair boards and will advise the outcome.

Discussion on our annual pooled meat goat sale was tabled until the next meeting, which has been scheduled for Sunday, July 13 at 3:00 pm at the home of Jane & Joey Haines. Directions to their home will go out to each member farm.

Susan and Alvie Richmond have offered to let us use their farm (they have a very nice lake) for our annual picnic. This will be held probably in early October, while the weather is still good. The actual day and date will be confirmed a little later and every one will be given ample time to put it on their calendars and to get directions.

Don't forget our SEMO SHOWDOWN VI. We are looking forward to seeing all of your lovely faces and beautiful goats on September 6 & 7 in Cape Girardeau, MO. For more information, contact me at 573-222-8673,  rainwater@dishmail.net or rainwater@rabbitridgefarms.com or our Superintendent for the show, Joey Haines at 573-833-6333, 573-579-8090, haines@redhawkridgeranch.com
